Man dies in suspected street race

15/10/2008 1:00:01 AM

A MAN died last night after the van he was driving was struck by a convertible that police believe may have been street racing on the Hume Highway at Warwick Farm.

The yellow Honda convertible hit the Toyota Hiace, apparently head-on, outside the Peter Warren car dealership about 7.45pm. The van driver was still trapped three hours later. Police were heard saying the convertible may have been racing a motorcycle, crossed the median strip and hit the van.

There was no sign of a motorbike stopped at the scene.

The Honda driver had surgery for internal injuries at Liverpool Hospital. His female passenger suffered leg injuries.

Last month two male P-plate drivers had their cars confiscated after being caught street racing at more than 130kmh along the Great Western Highway at St Marys - less than two kilometres from where an elderly couple were killed last year after a car involved in street race hit their vehicle.

Last month, Robert James Borkowski, 38, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Alan and Judith Howle.

Adam McDonald, the driver of another car involved in the accident, pleaded guilty to two charges of manslaughter in June. His sentencing hearing has been set for November 4, and the two matters may be heard together.

Police are appealing for witnesses to last night's accident to contact Liverpool police or Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
